Did you know snails could be this cute?
1. Snails are small gastropod mollusks that live on land or water.
2. Many snails live in both the land AND the water.
3. Snails crawl by moving on their strong muscular foot.
4. They are mostly herbivores, and eat a variety of different plant foods.
5. Most snails are hermaphrodites with a full set of reproductive organs of both sexes.
6. Snails secrete mucus to help move themselves along.
7. The mucus actually allows them to crawl over sharp objects without injury.
8. Baby snails hatch from an egg with a small shell already in place.
9. Some snails hibernate in the winter.
10. Some also estivate - it's like hibernation, but during times of drought.
11. Snails may live anywhere from about 2 years in the wild to 15 years in captivity.
12. A snail's shell grows as the snail does, with new material added to the edge.
13. The shell at the center, then, is as old as the snail is, while the shell near the edge is newer.
14. A snail's shell forms a logarithmic spiral, which is too complicated to explain here.
